MEET THE ABB TEAM! 👭🏻

Did you know that I’m currently working on my sophomore feature documenary, AMERICANA BANG BANG?! It’s been a while since I made an update and I promise I will make more updates this year because this train is moving!

I’ve decided to reunite with my LIQUOR STORE DREAMS Executive Producer, Diane Quon (MINDING THE GAP), who is joining me again with this film. This is our third project we’re working on together after we did the K-pop documentary on The Rose called THE ROSE: COME BACK TO ME. Safe to say, I love working with Diane and we’re so glad to have her on the team.

On our Producing team, I have Kasey Han and Betty Hang. I really wanted to find a Producer last year and Kasey reached out to me and she was the perfect fit. She comes from a more traditional background and has worked on more commercial documentaries with Netflix, Campfire, and etc. We’re excited to have her expertise on this project.

And you already know how much I love working with Betty! Betty and I worked together on Elizabeth Ai’s NEW WAVE documentary and clicked immediately. Love her down BAD!

And of course, I’m going to team up again with my LSD editor, Christina Sun Kim. She understands my vision wholly and is always willing to experiment with me and I appreciate that.

5TH ANNUAL AAPI AGAINST GUN VIOLENCE CONVENING

I went to Washington D.C for the 5th Annual Asians Against Gun Violence Convening! Last year, I went as a spectator and this year, I was invited by OCA National to speak on their panel— The New Faces of Gun Ownership: Asian Americans. I talked about why I decided to work on AMERICANA BANG BANG and why Asian Americans are arming up at a rapid rate!

As you may have guessed, there are not that many Asian Americans in the gun advocacy space so various orgs like Moms Rising, Newtown Action Alliance, CAA, APIA Vote and OCA National, came together to create an event just for us— AAPI Against Gun Violence. They created this event right after the 2021 Atlanta Spa Shooting and I’m so thankful it exists.

I met so many great people from various orgs that are doing fantastic work. This is a photo of me, Thu, Executive Director of OCA National and Angel Harlins, cousin of Latasha Harlins and Executive Director of the Latasha Harlins Foundation.

So many educators, policy makers, cultural leaders and more, all came together to share information and talk with one another. Even U.S. Senator Andy Kim stopped by to talk about his time protesting at Delaney Hall. I’m glad to see that even though we’re in different fields, we all have a collective goal of reducing gun violence within our community and beyond. I hope this convening continues to grow in the coming years.
